The Fort Zachary Taylor Fortress comes with many names, Fort Taylor or Fort Zach. It was named after President Zachary Taylor in 1850 after he suddenly died. This fortress was apart of the Third Tier System of Defense Fortifications Plan. Based on the article Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park" it states, "The fort remained in Federal hands throughout the entire conflict. Its main role was to serve as headquarters of the U.S. Navy's East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron." Since it was built it has stayed open and on active duty until 1947 when it was recognized as a historical landmark.
