In 1773, the Boston Tea Party had caused more restricted laws and higher taxes, dividing the colonies into Patriots and Loyalists. George Washington became the General of the Continental Army. While his headquarters was located in Manhattan, New York, it was an easy target that was in need of protection. That is when Fort Defiance was built; with three pounder cannons and four 18-pound cannons.
On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed. Days later, the British ships sailed up the Hudson River and Fort Defiance began to fire. Late August of 1776, the British began another plan of attack on Brooklyn, known as the “three-prong” attack. As the Roebuck came for attack, cannons fired at the stalled ship. Both the fort and ship were greatly damaged. After the war, Fort Defiance was abandon.
In memory of Fort Defiance, in Valentino Park stands a plaque. Although, it is not located directly where Fort Defiance once was.

This site provided basic information about Red Hooks Fort Defiance. It does raise some important issues about its use and further impact it held for Americans that may be useful for the classroom. It is a commercial site rather than an academic site. In general, I would use this site in my research paper.
Ugc. “Fort Defiance.” Atlas Obscura, 28 Feb. 2021, www.atlasobscura.com/places/fort-defiance.
This article discusses the importance of the Fort during the American Revolution. Although, the website does not further go into detail about Fort Defiance. As it is a commercial website for destined locations and a brief description. The site includes a "Know Before You Go" subheading that provides the a location stating "There's a plaque in Valentino Park commemorating the location of the fort." The impression I had from the title of the site was that it would have primary documents. It does list some primary sources. In general, I would not use this site in my research paper unless I could corroborate the information with another more trustworthy source.
