H. Budde Wagon Maker
Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
Henry Budde was one of several wagon makers in
Schleisingerville. He operated his shop out of the location that
is now 105 E. Washington Street.
His son, also named Henry, followed him at this location as
a wagon maker. He was also the village marshal from 1903 to
at least 1909 and was paid $160 per year to keep the village
street lamps lit in the early 1900's. Young Henry also picked up
the mail at the train station and delivered it to the post office.
He did this for about 30 years. The slow pace at which he
moved often irritated the local towns folk since they were
anxious to get their mail. They encouraged him to move along
a little faster. Eventually they tagged him with the nick-name
"Get -a-long" Budde.
