The museum got its start in 1936 when the McGregor Public Library started collecting items. The collection grew under the direction of local historian Mrs. Lena Myers. Eventually, the collection grew and was moved to another location where it filled the entire building by 1963. The museum opened at its present location in 1982. This building was erected in 1886 and housed a grocery and jewelry store until 1902. A number of other businesses occupied the building in the coming decades including a nut store and a restaurant. In 1982, it was donated to the museum by Myers' son, Richard, and his wife Isabel, in honor of his mother.
