2-8 East Kemp, 1887

Architect W. L. Dow. Local attorney John B. Hanten helped with financing. The building has housed a wide variety of businesses over the years. Key financial institutions such as the Dakota Loan and Trust, Security National Bank, and Farmers and Merchants Bank have been located here.

Constructed of purple-red quartzite stone over brick, the Granite Block has a wealth of detail including checkerboard patterns, bands of color, arcades, colonettes, and projecting bays. It is one of the downtown’s most outstanding buildings.
