Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
In 1926, Saxe's Oshkosh Theatre opened its doors for the first time. Over time, the theater was known simply as Oshkosh Theatre and was considered the most luxurious theater in the city. It was built on the previous site of the Orpheum Theater. The theater could hold 1,500 visitors and remained a popular downtown destination for three decades. The theater closed in 1957, coinciding with the rising popularity of television. JC Penny took control of the building in 1960 and razed it to make room for a new department store.
