Harry Horning ,Fred Ahrens and James Remington started a business called The Blue Front Garage to allow them to study engines. Eventually, they built their own engine and their engine business grew into the Waukesha Motor Company. A Waukesha Motor Company advertisement touted their ability to make "Repairs to Automobiles and all kinds of Machinery."

Harry Horning ,Fred Ahrens and James Remington formed a corporation to operate a garage and manufacture gasoline engines. They set up business as The Blue Front Garage and took in cars for a washing, storage or repair, Unbeknownst to the car owners, during the night the car's engine was dissected, diagnosed and studied. By morning it was put together again, tuned up and adjusted. The Blue Front Garage won fame as the young engineers of Waukesha learned about engines, improving all that they could.
When they were ready, Horning, Ahrens and Remington built their own engine. Their engine started easily and ran well, which was an achievement by the standards of the day. Those late nights of research allowed them to achieve their goal of manufacturing gasoline engines and research also became a hallmark of the Waukesha Motor Company.
