In 1875, Lyman G. Mason built the Mason Block on the southeast corner of Western Avenue and First Street. In late November-early December 1889, Union National Bank moved into the building occupying the southwest corner of the building.
In October 1917, Union National Bank tore down the Mason Block and constructed an eight-story building that is still standing today. The exterior of the building was constructed with polished granite at the base, unpolished granite to the base of the third floor, and the upper floors ornamented with terra cotta and brick.
Muskegon National Bank organized in 1870 and constructed a building in 1874-1875 on the southwest corner of Western Avenue and First Street. In March 1875, the bank moved into its new location. In August 1890, Hackley National Bank succeeded Muskegon National Bank at this location.
In 1929, Hackley National Bank and Union National Bank merged to become Hackley Union National Bank. The new bank occupied the previous Union National Bank building with the only change to the building being the name above the entrance.
In 1967, the building was remodeled with white Georgia Cherokee marble accented with Black Serpentine marble covering the granite and brick. When finished, a new Hackley Union National Bank & Trust Co. sign adorned the First Street side.
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Urban Renewal affected Downtown Muskegon. Many buildings were torn down to create a new mall. The Hackley Union National Bank building was incorporated into the mall.
Comerica Bank acquired Hackley Bank in 1982. In June 2001, Comerica announced that the bank was closing its downtown doors permanently after being open for 100 years. One year later the Muskegon Mall closed and its demolition began in 2003.
Parkland Properties purchased the building in 2008 and in 2017 commenced turning the building into apartments. The next year, Highpoint Flats opened with 47 apartments and office space on the ground floor.
