This park behind Auburn's fire department is named in honor of Dr. Robert H. Goddard, a local physicist known today as "the father of modern rocket propulsion. Goddard launched the first liquid-propelled rocket. The event occurred in Auburn on March 16, 1926 and while little-noticed at the time, proved to be a significant event in the history of science. This park was dedicated to Goddard's memory by the Rotary Club of Auburn in 1970 and rededicated on May 6, 1994. in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Auburn Rotary Club with assistance from the business community and the Auburn Mall.

Dr. Robert Goddard left his footprint on the town of Auburn. The history of his work has been preserved by the Auburn Historical Museum.
