Sanford Town Hall
Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
Sanford Town Hall was built in 1873 to serve as Sanford's second town hall and as a public meeting hall. This building served these roles until around 1908, the time when the town offices were moved to a new building in Sanford. Soon enough, the building became more unused and the town meeting eventually voted to sell it. Despite all of this, the building still stands as all of the offers were too low to be seriously considered.

Backstory and Context

The Sanford Town Hall was built back in 1873 at a cost of $4,354. The building served as the townhouse of Sanford and Springvale villages for 35 years. By the end of these 35 years, it became known as the Springvale Town Hall after the construction of the new town hall in 1908.
For many years, this building was used for dramatic, athletic, school, and other events. By the 1950s, however, it was used so seldomly that the Town Meeting in 1961 voted to sell it. After hearing many offers, they ultimately decided that they were all too low to be seriously considered. Following this, the building was used for 30 years as the headquarters of the SSYAA, or the Sanford-Springvale Youth Athletic Association. Soon after the opening of the refurbished Nasson Gymnasium, renamed the Nasson Community Center, the SSYAA was to move out.
Finally, in 2005 the building was turned over to the Sanford-Springvale Historical Society for a museum. This same museum later opened in 2006 and stands there to this day. The museum can be found at 505 Main Street, where it is operated by the Sanford-Springvale Historical Society.
