Charles Allbee opened his successful clothing store and tailor shop on Washington Street in Sanford in the 1880s after being in business with his own brother Benjamin F. in Milton Mills, New Hampshire.

In 1891 Benjamin joined Charles in Sanford and the firm name was changed to Allbee Brothers. The name remained Allbee Brothers until 1902 when Benjamin became the primary owner of the business.

Charles is seemingly the man standing in the doorway. The other people in the photo have not been identified. Charles was an active participant in local affairs and served as town clerk of Sanford from the years 1894 to 1900.
