For the tenth anniversary of the attacks on September 11th, the memorial was made to honor the deaths and effects of this tragedy. The Patriot Memorial is very important to people in the community and to people who lost loved ones during the attacks on September 11, 2001 or had their lives altered from the effects of the events. Having a place to be able to go to grieve and remember those who lost their lives is always important.
To start off, the large steel beam shown at the Wellington Patriot Memorial was a piece of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Before the building collapsed, the beam was located right below the planes crash zone. It is one of the biggest pieces of the building that was able to be retrieved from the World Trade Center. The beam is also referred to as C-46. Before the attack, the C-46 was a window section from the sixty-ninth floor to the seventy-first floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. The C-46 endured lots of fire damage, but luckily was still able to be recovered. The South Tower was hit by the plane at 9:03 am by Flight 175. Sixty-five people lost their lives on this flight. From floor seventy-seven to floor eighty-five in the south tower, only fourteen people survived. A total of 2,801 people were killed by the World Trade Center.
This monument also includes an Eternal Flame Fountain. The Eternal Flame was lit on top of the fountain which is located in the center of the memorial on September 11, 2011. This eternal flame is a way for the community to forever remember the services and sacrifices of those who tried to help save the victims of the plane crashes and the people in the buildings. Around the fountain, there are four etched glass panels. Each of these panels have the names of the victims engraved. These glass panels specifically recognize the 2,996 people who died from the attacks; although over 1,100 of the World Trade Center victims still remain unidentified to this day. Of those who died, over four hundred were first responders. They died in action heroically trying to help and save lives of people stuck in the buildings.
September 11th will always be an important day in our countries history. This memorial will always be a great reminder about the tragedy and the lives lost to the people in the community. Many people come to mourn their lost ones from the attacks or come to recognize and thank those who risked their lives to save others. Having this monument has been a great way to represent and remember the events on September eleventh. People today are still being effected by these horrible attacks. From the increase in post traumatic stress disorders, to the economic struggles; having a place to have an outlet to embrace the hardships is important. This memorial will help carry on the memory of this terrible tragedy for many more years to come.
