St. Peter's Episcopal church was incorporated in 1817. At the time, the church met at the County Courthouse, whose space was shared by several congregations without building at that time. A site was donated for the building by William Little, one of the original members of the church and a founder of the city of Delaware, and the first church's cornerstone was laid in 1825. In 1827, St, Peter's organized the first Sunday School in Delaware County. Its first pastor was the Reverend Philander Chase, who had previously founded churches in Worthingon and Columbus, and later became the first bishop of the Episcopalian church's Diocese of Ohio, which also made Bishop Chase the first Protestant Bishop in Ohio of any denomination. In 1823, he established a seminary in Gambier, OH, which is today Kenyon College. The church's first bell was purchased in 1830 and later sold to the county, where it was placed in the steeple of the courthouse. The original building was razed in 1844 and the present structure completed in 1846. The first couple to be married in the new building planted a rosebush on the northwest corner of the church, which still bloomed yearly as of 2017.
