North Central West Virginia has been a place where many significant things have happened. For a long time it was considered to be the Western Frontier of the United States, and circuit riders and camp meetings certainly played a role. Many residents of this area were involved in the Revolutionary War. That revolutionary spirit helped to create the Methodist Protestant movement. Certainly, the American Civil War impacted not only the people here, but the churches themselves with the division of the Methodist Episcopal Church into North and South. All of these divisions caused many church congregations to be formed, and often right next to each other!

Into that context, it is interesting to see that multiple denominations, and even divisions of the Methodist Church itself, shared the building at times, although at the outset this building was strictly meant for the Methodist Episcopal South congregation.
