The Transportation Museum in Fayetteville is located in the former Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway depot which was constructed in 1890 and has been restored. The museum features exhibits that describe the history of the town and region from prehistoric days to the present. Highlights include the model train room, an interactive steamboat, and a recreated station agent's office. Adjacent to the depot is an annex which contains vintage cars, airplanes, a 1920s gas station and a vintage steam pump. Other topics covered in the museum include law enforcement and fire fighting, agriculture, and the early years of Fort Bragg and Pope Air Field. The depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983
