In 1774 William Preston moved to Smithfield (present day Blacksburg). William Preston served in many political offices including County Lieutenant, Sheriff, and County Surveyor. James Preston inherited Smithfield when William Preston died in 1783. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates, and was Governor of Virginia from 1816-1819. Eventually, Preston and Olin Institute was formed. The institute would eventually become Virginia Tech. If you would like to know more, click on the link below.
