When the Dayton's name first went up on this historic building in 1903, it marked the beginning of what would become a massive department store chain. For many Minnesotans, however, this original flagship Dayton's department store stood at the heart of the downtown shopping and holiday experiences on Minneapolis' famed Nicollet Mall for nearly 100 years. Even after the iconic store was converted to a Marshall Fields in 2001, and soon after bought by Macy's in 2006, this building continued in the twenty-first century as downtown's only remaining department store until March 19, 2017, when it closed its door for the last time.
