Backstory and Context

Stella Lazelle Barnhart did not go to school here, but her pastor did. She told him that she wanted to leave her estate to a Methodist Institution and she included that in her will as well. Her lawyer made that happen. The result was the Barnhart Memorial Health Center. It was an especially fitting gift, as it also honored her father, who had been a physician in Fairmont from 1857-1885, and was one of the founders of the West Virginia Medical Association.
For several years prior to the opening of this facility, the Health Center had been located at 68 College Avenue – formerly the President’s Residence and currently the Upshur Parish House.
