Description
This tour will cover the various protest movements of the New York Young Lords from 1969 to the early 1970s, with a focus on their leadership during the "Garbage Offensive" from July to September 1969. The Puerto Rican activists who composed the Young Lords sought an end to U.S. colonialism and pushed back against discrimination in their local communities. The five stops on this tour (with an optional sixth stop as an introduction) will cover the formation and general strategy of the Young Lords, as well as the tactics employed during the Garbage Offensive that sought to raise awareness about the lack of sanitation services in East Harlem and rally support for their organization. The stops on this tour generally flow chronologically, though the group focused on many issues and operated at many locations at different times. Thus, this tour seeks to use a few specific locations to provide a big-picture overview of their activities.
