Historic Sites, Monuments, Landmarks, and Public Art (National Historic Landmark)

Listen

R. D. Bailey Lake, which was originally called Justice Reservoir for its proximity to Justice, WV, was dedicated to the memory of Robert D. Bailey, Sr., a beloved and influential Mingo County judge during the 1920s. It is located on the Guyandotte River in Wyoming and Mingo Counties in West Virginia.

Overlook to the R.D. Bailey Dam.

Listen

The R. D. Bailey Lake features a 310-foot dam; the top length stretches for 1,370 feet. The lake also features a seasonal pool for recreation. Additionally, the lake site provides a water storage capacity of 66 billion gallons which aids in flood control on the Guyandotte River1.

The lake project was initiated in the summer of 1967 and costed $180 million; it was not completed until 1980. The lake project also included the development of 19,000 acres of land, which the Corps of Engineers has leased to the state Division of Natural Resources. The land is used as a wildlife management as well as recreational site. R.D. Bailey Lake visitors can picnic, boat, swim, fish, hike, and rock climb2.
