Whitehaven Welcome Center introduces visitors to the history, culture, and commerce of Paducah. The welcome center is located in a restored Southern mansion that dates back the the Civil War and features period furnishings and artifacts of its former resident, Vice President Alben Barkley.

Architecture is one of key elements of preserving the past. While more fluid in the transitioning over time, architecture is inspiring on levels that some do not recognizes. The architecture itself can be a symbol whether Romanesque like the structures in Washington DC. Yet the more subtle structures like the Whitehaven rest stop on I-24 remain as symbols of the proud past.

	A restored traditional style Southern Antebellum mansion, Whitehaven now provides respite for travelers along the highway. The architecture is symbol of the prestige and power that was held highly in the south prior to the Civil War. The pillars and style is similar to the style used in the construction of the White House.

	Primarily restored during the twentieth century, this symbol of the past has become another of the symbols of the Paducah areas. The importance of maintaining symbols of the past is essential to educate the future.

	As times have changed, not only through the changing political feuds and the changes of community structure, certain reminders are necessary to remember the origins of certain societies. Whitehaven is a unique symbol of a time which is difficult to imagine today. The importance of acknowledging a part of the United States past that may not be welcome is important to the future.
