Would you like to be able to simply walk or drive and listen to information about nearby historical and cultural landmarks? Try the latest feature in our free mobile application- geofencing!

While our website is mobile-friendly, Clio also offers a free mobile application for both Android and iOS that offers a variety of additional features including notifications and other features based on your precise location. For example, you can ask the mobile application to automatically detect nearby landmarks as you walk or drive by setting a notification radius from ten to five thousand meters. After that, you can select options such as automatically playing the audio version of Clio entries which makes it possible to simply walk or drive and listen vs. taking a preset walking or driving tour. You can pair these location-based notifications with an active walking or driving tour, request directions, and also fine-tune settings to best fit the kinds of entries you want to discover and the information you will receive as you move through the world.

In the app home screen screenshot example to the left, the user has shared their location with Clio. By default, they will see the nearest ten landmarks along with their location (the blue dot). If they would like more than ten landmarks, they can hit the show more button. They can also browse the map and click anywhere on the map to see entries near that location. To reset the home screen and see the ten nearest entries, just hit the Clio logo for an update. You can also toggle between the list view and map view, and a whole lot more.

To try geofencing on the mobile application, first click on the geofencing icon in the top right corner of the app. It’s round and looks a little like a cross between a bullseye and a pizza with a slice missing. After that, you will see the menu screen below on the left. When you toggle on “enable background for entry discovery,” you will see a menu screen with many options. Please note you can exit geofencing anytime with the “go back” tab that appears at the top of the geofencing menu.

Below the initial set of options, you will see “Notification Distance” and a slider that gives you the option to increase or decrease the notification radius from 10 meters to 5000 meters. Below that, you will see a live map showing your location, that radius, and the location of nearby entries. This feature is designed to help the user select the best notification radius based on nearby entries and their mode of travel. If you would like the historical and cultural organizations in your community to add more entries, please reach out to them. Clio is free and designed to help organizations create entries and walking tours.

The first guide in the "instructional guides" section of this website https://theclio.com/resources offers a step-by-step guide for using geofencing in the mobile application, complete with pictures. I hope you love this new feature!

I am committed to continually improving Clio and keeping it free for everyone thanks to support from users. To learn more about how you can support the project, please click here: https://theclio.com/donate
