In the 1850’s the Kispert Clothing store was here, later a saloon, a cigar store and a flour-feed store. In the 1890s, Frank Koser started "The City Bakery," and it was later sold to the Spangler family. P.J. Pinger erected the brick building in 1904. In 1917, Fred Schilke bought the bakery and named it "Bon Ton Bakery" which means “your good bakery.” In 1920 Floyd Fisher bought the building, and his family has operated the Bon Ton through five generations. In 1925 they bought the Universal Grocery Store to the east, and in 1999 the Bon Ton storefront expanded to include both buildings.
