William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield is buried in the Hatfield Cemetery near Logan, WV. His grave is marked with a 13 foot tall marble sculpture of him standing erect. The statue is engraved with his name as well as the names of his thirteen children.
Founder of the Logan Wildcats, Hatfield was a supporter of the Confederate cause. His assumed involvement in the murder of Asa Harmon McCoy led to the now infamous Hatfield-McCoy Feud. McCoy fought for the Union Army, placing the two families on opposite sides of the bloody Civil War. (2)
After the feud ended, Anse lived the remainder of his life with his wife and family in Sara Ann, WV He died in 1921 from pneumonia at his family home. His funeral was attended by most of his near 75 direct descendants. (1)
His wife and children had a life size marble statue of Anse carved by F. C. McColm in Italy and shipped back to Sara Ann. The Italian marble statue has marked Hatfield’s grave since 1926.
