Not much is known about Pastor Crowder. He was minister at the Methodist-Episcopal Church South, now known as the 1887 Church at Manatee Village Historical Park, during its construction. He died during the Yellow Fever epidemic of that year, never getting to see the church completed. Many believe the outbreak was brought to Manatee when suppliers ran the quarantine in Tampa to bring construction materials to town for the church.

Rev. J. R. Crowder, Born in Paris, Tenn. Aug. 5, 1845— Died Nov. 1, 1887.
