From the bridge look to the east. Just past the river bend was the probable site where the old Fort Scott and California road forded together. As early as the 1830s the crossing saw a great deal of traffic, including military activity during the Civil War. By the 1880s, a bridge was in use here which was replaced in the 1980s by this current bridge.
