The town was founded as a shipping and supply point on the Kansas City, Lawrence and Southern Railroad. A post office was established in 1873 and a store in 1878. A two-room school was built in 1898 and one room was never used. Reuben Hacket, the county's first citizen and first county Justice of the Peace, established a farm northwest of the townsite. The small settlement flourished into the 1940s with stores and a church and then declined.
