The church was organized in 1897, meeting first at Brown School until the church was built in 1900. Alfred F. Richmond, a boy of 11 in 1863, witnessed the escape of William Clarke Quantrill's raiders from Lawrence and their pursuit by U.S. Cavalry under the command of Preston Plumb in the area where the church now stands.
