The Discovery IV
Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
The oldest permanent outdoor sculpture to be commissioned by the College of Creative Arts, The Discovery IV was installed on March 14, 2008. Huntington artist Jonathan Cox created the work from marble and stainless steel. The eighteen-foot tall piece is kinetic, allowing it to rotate according to the whims of the wind. The Discovery IV is the fourth sculpture in The Discovery series and though all the works in this series share a general leaf shape, The Discovery IV was the first intended for outdoor installation and the first to use steel. Cox thought of the marble block at the base as an egg or seed from which the leaf springs. Cox's experience constructing things with his hands began in his youth when he created boats in Florida with his father. This influence seems to be reflected in the shape and movement of The Discovery IV which seems to mimic a sail.
