In 1783, leaders of the Chickasaw Nation signed entered into an alliance with the newly-independent United States by signing a treaty near a spring that was located about 100 yards north of this sign. The Chickasaw were previously able to keep the settlers from encroaching upon their lands through an alliance with British traders. Following the defeat of the British, the tribe sought an alliance with the United States in order to gain more reliable access to supplies and weapons.
