The Walter Robinson House was built between 1859-1865 by the famous architect Henry Howard. The mansion architecture is a blend of Greek Revival and Italianate style. The mansion includes a second story gallery which was an essential feature of the homes in the historic Garden District. The home was built for Virginia native Walter Robinson and was later used as a boarding house, then as another private residence.

The Walter Robinson House was completed in 1965 for Walter Robinson after his move to New Orleans. Robinson wanted to establish himself as a cotton factor, but instead became a tobacco merchant. The Robinson House is one of the largest homes in the historic Garden District. Its Greek Revival and Italianate style architecture add to the beauty of the district. This house features many innovative designs such as Doric and Corinthian columns. Other features are wall moldings with 22 carat gold leaf, marble mantles, and ceiling murals. The Robinson House has 16-foot-tall ceilings, seven bedrooms, and seven bathrooms. There are adjacent servant quarters and stables.

After the passing of Walter Robinson, the house was used as a “fancy boarding house” in the 1890’s. Once the boarding house moved from the residence, it became home to the president of Canal Barge Company for 60 years. It sold in 2000 for 2,225,000. In 2005, the Robinson House underwent a series of renovations based on the original plans including fresh landscaping.
