Lakewood grew rapidly through the second half of the 19th century from the small lakeside farming community of Rockport, into an inner ring suburb of Cleveland with a vibrant history and culture all its own. With a population density comparable to that of Washington D.C, the many citizens of Lakewood have a history of being politically active and civically engaged.
