The Clay County courthouse is a historical site which was built in 1912-1914 in the town of Brazil, and it replaced the former courthouse which was originally in Bowling Green. In the 19th century, there was much debate in Clay county over whether the county seat should remain in Bowling Green or be moved to a better location. By 1871, the people of Clay county had come around to moving the capital and they chose Brazil as the new county seat. The population of Brazil continued to grow over the next few decades, and they needed a new, bigger courthouse to house all of the new documents. The courthouse was designed by John Gaddis, and it was designed in the classical revival style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
