Levi S. Shomaker was a Monongalia County resident who earned a Medal of Honor for his role in capturing the flag of the 22nd Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War.

Levi S. Shomaker (or Shoemaker) was born in Monongalia County in 1840 when it was still part of Virginia. He volunteered to serve in the Union army and was placed as a sergeant with the 1st West Virginia Cavalry. On November 12, 1864, Shomaker was involved in a skirmish with confederate forces at Nineveh, Virginia. During the battle, Shomaker displayed great heroism in capturing the flag of the 22nd Virginia Cavalry. Shomaker was awarded the Medal of Honor later in November in recognition of his actions during the combat. The Medal of Honor recipient lived the rest of his life in Morgantown, and died in Clarksburg, WV in 1917.
