Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
The largest and the oldest historic Chinese cemetery in Hawaii, Manoa Chinese Cemetery was established in 1851 by the Lin Yee Chung Association. The 31 members of the original Association raised funds and donated at least 6 months of all of their earnings to ensure that a traditional Chinese burial ground would be available for them and for future generations. The cemetery property stretches out over ten thousand, seven hundred acres and holds roughly 10,000 individual burials.

One of the most influential founders of the Lin Yee Chung Association and the cemetery, Mr. Lum Ching- who is known honorifically as Tai Ju (meaning "Grand Ancestor")- is honored in a significant cultural celebration for local Chinese Hawaiians known as the Ching Ming Memorial Ceremony. The organization's name translates as "to bury in fellowship and honor" in English.
