Constructed in 1920 and expanded upon in 1929, the Erie Armory was originally built for the Pennsylvania National Guard's 112th Infantry. The four units of the 112th stationed here in 1920 remained at this location until 2007, when they were relocated to the National Guard Readiness Center in Cambridge, PA. The 112th has participated in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Iraq War; it has received two Presidential Unit Citations. The 112th Infantry is part of the 28th Division, which is the oldest continuously serving infantry division in the United States Army. Erie Armory was designed in a Colonial Revival architectural style by Pittsburgh architect, Joseph F. Kuntz, of the W.G. Wilkins Company. The W.G. Wilkins Company started work on Pennsylvania armories in 1905, with Kuntz himself designing at least 18 structures.

Erie Armory was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It currently houses Erie Insurance Company, who bought the building in 2013.
