Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
The national YWCA and YMCA organizations played active roles in the inclusion of African Americans into their programs, though the programs were still segregated well into the 1960s at some locations. The York YWCA, York County, Pennsylvania, is listed in the 1938 through 1941 Negro Motorist Green Book in the hotel category.

In 1945 the York YWCA provided educational and recreational programs to York’s African American community, offering community camps to “underprivileged children.” In 1946 the York YMCA hosted integrated clubs such as the Green Pine Boys Club where interracial swim events used the YMCA pool. However, the picture was not completely rosy; that same year, 1946, both the YMCA and YWCA denied full membership to African Americans. The York YWCA building is still standing, on East Market Street in York.
