Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
This building block, called the Arkell Block, is most notable for being the first location of Anderson's department store, called Northway and Anderson's Dry Goods. Margaret Miller worked for Anderson's as a dressmaker in the 1880s, employing four other female dressmakers under her supervision. She never married, and eventually opened her own dressmaking shop opposite the Grand Hotel on the upper storey of the block.
