The house was built by Thomas and Sabrina Melady. Its antebellum appearance gives the impression that it was built before the Civil War. However, this is not the case. There may have been a house at this location by the early 1892 because historical records indicate that Thomas' father, Joseph, passed away that year. The architecture of the house strongly indicates that it was built in the early 1900s (there is a slight possibility that an existing home at this location was remodeled and expanded). The home and the surrounding 2,000-acre property was purchased by Sabrina and Grady Kelley in 1934. At that point the property became known as the Kelley Plantation.
Over the years, the Kelleys and other owners have made a number of alterations to the house including the construction of a low glassed-in addition at the rear of the house in the late 1940s or 1950s. The house may have remained in the Kelley family at least through the mid-1990s. It is unclear when the present owners acquired it. Given its architectural importance, Melady House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
