This community centre and arena is named for NHL player Joe Thornton, who is from St. Thomas. Thornton was drafted #1 overall to the Boston Bruins in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He has also played with the San Jose Sharks, and in 2020 was signed to the Toronto Maple Leafs. He won both the Art Ross and Hart Memorial Trophies as the league's leading point-scorer and most valuable player, respectively, during the 2005-06 season.
