Brianna Marie Hickey was an Atlantic Beach resident who contracted meningococcal meningitis in the eighth grade and died on Dec. 31, 1996, at age 13. She is buried in Section J of the cemetery and is survived by her mother, Caroline, and siblings Ryan, Connor and Shea. A memorial vaccination fund was created in her name at the University of Oxford.

Brianna was born on June 4, 1983, and attended Darnell Cookman Middle School in Jacksonville, Florida, where she was a member of the National Junior Honor Society. She played soccer for Darnell Cookman Middle and on a 15-and-under travel team. Her father, Dr. Stephen T. Hickey, a former physician’s assistant who competed in the 1968 Olympic Trials in track and field and for Georgetown University, also died unexpectantly at age 52 and is buried beside his daughter. Brianna Hickey’s headstone is made of polished black granite and is inscribed with a silhouette of a girl playing soccer while wearing the No. 8 jersey.
