Harry Hawkes Jr. was a former World War I reconnaissance pilot with the American Expeditionary Force in France who spent more than 30 years in the insurance business in Connecticut before relocating to Neptune Beach, Florida, in 1956. He operated Henry Hawkes & Son Agency, a real estate brokage firm in Jacksonville Beach.

Henry "Harry" Hawkes Jr. was born on Dec. 19, 1894, in Manhattan, the third son of Irish immigrants Flora and Henry Hawkes Sr., a building contractor in New York City. Harry attended Columbia College and was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. In July 1917, he enlisted in the Army at age 22 and began flight training. He was deployed to France in 1918 as a reconnaissance pilot with the American Expeditionary Force. He survived a crash landing in March 1918. After being discharged from the Army Air Corps in February 1919, he graduated from Columbia College. He married Alice M. Wilson in 1927 and was employed as an insurance agent in Stamford and Norwich, Connecticut. He spent the last eight years of his life in Neptune Beach, where he sold real estate and resided at 1041 Florida Blvd. He and his wife were members of Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach. He died from emphysema. His flat granite government marker is located in the Veterans Section (B) of Warren Smith Cemetery.
