New Life
Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
New Life consists of three monumental stainless steel and marble sculptures. Jonathan Cox created the seventeen foot tall works in 2015. The installation was commissioned by Ben Hatfield in honor of his late wife. Hatfield donated the work to the Charleston Area Medical Center Cancer Center (CAMCCC), where the piece was placed in the Healing Gardens. New Life consists of three major components. Each near identical component has a concrete base faced in marble, from which stainless steel branches soar. The branches resemble growing seeds or other natural elements sprouting upwards. The work reflects CAMCCC's focus on creating a space that inspires hope and healing.
Cox grew up in Florida, though he has lived in West Virginia for many years. He teaches sculpture at Marshall University when not engaged with his own practice. Cox tends towards large-scale works of harmonious public art that invite the viewer to physically interact with the piece.
