The preserve was originally known as the Crystal River Buffer Preserve, but in January of 2004, when it became a state park the name was changed to the Crystal River Preserve State Park. The preserve is made up of 27,500 acres of original Florida land. The land ranges from salt marshes, tidal creeks, mangrove islands, hardwood forests, coastal scrubs, and pine wood. This state park holds original land that has changed little since the Europeans arrived in Florida 500 years ago.
