The Custer State Park is a varied region that consists of prairies and many jagged mountains in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota. The park measures up to about 114 square miles, which makes it amongst one of the largest state parks in the continental region of the United States. The Custer State Park is named after George Armstrong Custer, who is known for leading the expedition that discovered gold along French Creek in 1874. The park was designated a game preserve in 1913 and was made a state park in 1919, primarily through the work of Governor Peter Norbeck.
