Barron Collier was the founder of this park. He financed the building and purchased the land for this park. The Seminoles and the Miccosukee Indians resided in the area for centuries. Since there is so much history on this park between the two tribes of Indians, many Indians whose ancestors fought in the Second Seminole War still live in the area.

Going back further, in the 1700s, three Seminole Wars took place for the sole purpose of removing Seminoles from Florida and send them over to reservations. During that last war, the Seminoles were able to find refuge in the swamps of Southwest Florida. the 1920s was when Barron bought millions of acres of this land, soon after it became Collier County.

Although the park was created to reserve the royal palms it then became a memorial site for Barron Gift Collier. It was also there as a memorial to those who fought on both sides of the Seminole War because a lot of lives were lost on both sides.
