Old Hospital Entrance
Introduction
Text-to-speech Audio
The University of Mississippi Medical Center opened in 1955. It included the state's first four-year medical school and a hospital, now referred to as the "old hospital." The hospital provided training to medical students and served the needs of Mississippians by providing specialized care and cutting-edge research.
It was here that Dr. James D. Hardy conducted the first successful lung transplant and cross-species heart transplant. It is also the place where Civil Rights activist, Medgar Evers, was taken and died after being shot at his home. When the hospital opened it was segregated so these doors would have been open to white patients only. It was desegregated in 1965.
