This Mississippi Blues Trail historical marker speaks to the significance of the Hernando area to the blues genre, as many blues artists originally hailed from the area. "Beale Town Bound" refers to a song recorded by the Beale Street Sheiks (Frank Stokes and Dan Sane), who were instrumental in establishing a major blues center in 1920s Memphis. Other famous blues artists also got their start in the area, including Jim Jackson, Robert Wilkins, George “Mojo” Buford of the Muddy Waters band, and guitarist Earl Bell.

The Hernando area was home to many blues artists, such as Dan Sane, Jim Jackson, Robert Wilkins, George “Mojo” Buford of the Muddy Waters band, and guitarist Earl Bell.

Frank Stokes and Dan Sane collaborated on over twenty projects as The Beale Street Sheiks between 1927 and 1929. Sane was born near Hernando in 1892, before joining forces with Stokes in Memphis.

Jim Jackson, born in Hernando in 1878, was one of the oldest blues artists. He worked for many years with traveling medicine shows such as the Rabbit Foot Minstrels and Silas Green From New Orleans. He is best known for his song, "Jim Jackson's Kansas City Blues."

Several other artists, though not originally from Hernando, performed here before making moves to the blues center in Memphis.
