You are standing in front of Historic Sotterley's 18th century stable. The early museum named it the Warehouse, although historically it was used as a stable. As you look on the side of the building, you will see the date,1757. This is accurate. Keep in mind, the owner of Sotterley from 1910-1940, Herbert Satterlee, from New York, took out the barn doors in the back and put in new terraced landscaping, using indigenous rock. Today, the Warehouse (stable) is used for a meeting place, and houses the "Urgency of Preservation" exhibit. If you look closely to some of the original brick, you may see some fingerprints of enslaved children who were assigned tasks such as making bricks. George Plater the third, bred horses for racing and would have boarded the animals here.
In the state of Maryland students at various grade levels explore the history of slavery in our world, our nation, and our state/region. As students uncover and develop an understanding about this history they try to answer "Essential Questions" that are included in the state social studies curriculum. Touring Historic Sotterley's grounds and buildings can help connect students and teachers with the content that they are learning about in the classroom.
Inside the Warehouse is an exhibit dedicated to preserving the story of Resurrection Manor. Resurrection Manor was a colonial land grant that included what is now Sotterley. The exhibit addresses two main topis:
- Why preservation is important
- The story of Resurrection Manor and the role it played in early colonial Maryland
Essential Questions related to this section of the tour:
