The Blue Ridge Institute and Museum is a museum situated on Ferrum College's campus dedicated towards preserving and interpreting the music and folk history of primarily the Blue Ridge mountain region but also the rest of Virginia and Appalachia. It opened in the early 1970s and offers many education and entertainment programs, such as festivals, concerts, and exhibitions. A 19th century farmstead is also located at the museum. The museum also has an archives, where historic photographs, recordings, and documents are housed. Many of these materials are contained in a digital archive which can be accessed through the museum's website.
